We also learned about Vietnamese nouns , adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Those are the most basic building blocks of any word. We’ll learn negation and conjunction in this last lesson of our express course on Vietnamese Grammar.
The way we Vietnamese say no is really close to the English way as well. The equivalent of not is không in Vietnamese. Let’s consider the following instance in which a verb is negated, to be specific.
We need to put do not in front of the verb read in the English negative sentence. In the Vietnamese translation, instead of no, we use the word không. In most cases, this word không would be the primary word for negation.
To see how adjectives are negated, let ‘s take a further example. Consider the following:
Negation of adjectives
Here, in order to negate it, we again use không before the adjective thú vị(“interesting”).
The overview of this section?
Use không in the place of doesn’t, don’t or isn’t, aren’t, etc
Now that we are aware of most of Vietnamese ‘s fundamental sentential structures, it seems fitting to learn about conjunctions so that basic sentences can be connected into more complex ones.
Let ‘s start with and, which connects thoughts that help each other, but contrast opposite thoughts. In Vietnamese, và and nhưng are the equivalent of and but, respectively. Let the two following examples demonstrate their use.
Examples of and and but:
|Phương pháp này
In these two examples, we can observe that và(“and) “and nhưng(“but”) are used exactly in place of their English counterparts. In the first case, and is used to link two nouns, whereas in the second example, but is used to link two adjectives. Let ‘s look at an instance where we use two basic sentences and link them:
Connecting simple sentences
|His idea is great
|I really like it
|Ý tưởng của anh ta hay
|tôi thực sự thích nó
Here, again, the Vietnamese use of và (“and”) is absolutely similar to the English use of and.
Another conjunction is widely used: or, whose Vietnamese counterpart is hay, which shares a very close usage with or.
Either … or the associated construct is represented by the single word hoặc.
A few examples to demonstrate hay and hoặc are given below.
Examples of hay and hoặc uses
|Xin vui lòng
|câu hỏi này
|câu hỏi kia
In conclusion, what we have just heard about Vietnamese conjunctions
- Vietnamese Conjunctions
- Use và(“and”), nhưng(“but”), hay(“or”), hoặc (“either…or”) the way you use them in English.
