HOW TO ASK ABOUT THE PRICE

Question:
To ask about the price, you can use “bao nhiêu” or “bao nhiêu tiền” at the end of the question

Shopping in Vietnamese

For example,

Cái ly này bao nhiêu tiền? (How much is this glass?)

Quyển sách đó bao nhiêu? (How much is that book?)

Answer:

In the answer, the phrase “bao nhiêu” or “bao nhiêu tiền”  is replaced with the price.

Cái ly này bao nhiêu tiền? –> Cái ly này 5000 đồng
Quyển sách đó bao nhiêu? –> Quyển sách đó 15000 (đồng)

Note:

  • đồng” or “Việt Nam đồng” is the official currency of Viet Nam
  • The word “đồng” is optional when it comes to the price.

HOW TO BARGAIN

mắc means expensive. If it is followed by “dữ” or “quá“, it means “very expensive

When you think the price is unreasonable, you can say :

  • (Sao) mắc dữ vậy?
  • (Sao) mắc quá vậy?

To ask the seller to lower the price, you can say

  • Bớt chút đi! (Lower the price a little bit please)
  • Làm ơn bớt chút đi!

After that, tell them the price that you wish to pay by the structure “The price you want + đi/ thôi”

For example,

  • 5000 đồng thôi.
  • 20000 .
