TIPS: IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILL WITH ONLY 20 MINUTES PER DAY

IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING SKILL WITH 20 MINUTES PER DAY

First and foremost, please take a look at the photos below. This is the progress of my beloved student – Andrea has made after 9 months. Isn’t it amazing? Just after 9 months, she has made a massive improvement that even I couldn’t believe my eyes. Today I’ll share with you guys one of the best methods to boost your listening skill to the next level. That is….

BEFORE – DATE: NOVEMBER 27 2018 – MISSING TONE MARKS, VOWELS, CONSONANTS HERE AND THERE
AFTER – DATE: AUGUST 15 2019 – ALMOST CORRECT

That is DICTATION.

Yes dictation.

For each listening exercise in the lesson, I encouraged Andrea to try to note down the scripts after answering all the questions. Then in the lesson, I help her to listen again, and show her why this or that word is hard for her to recognize.

When she fully understands the scripts, her mission is to listen to the scripts that we’ve worked on for 3 days until the next lesson while she is driving or cooking or even taking a shower.

And as you can see, the result is rewarding.

So here are the steps I noted down in case you are wondering what I am talking about:

  • 1- Find a listening material that is a little bit higher than your level
  • 2 – Listen and try to grab the meaning first
  • 3 – Listen and note down every single word that you hear (leave blanks for words you cannot recognize. It’s totally fine not to know a couple of words)
  • 4 – Compare your note to the scripts and underline all mistakes/ missing words. Listen again to find out why these words are missed. If you’re learning with a teacher, you may want to ask her/him to help you
  • 5- Keep listening to that recording whenever you have free time, until you are able to understand the whole conversation to the full

Please please bear in mind that NEVER EVER think that you are not able to do it. At first, everyone will  suck definitely (I used to when I first learned English) but later on, gradually you’ll become better and better until the point that you realize you’ve made tremendous progress. So be PATIENT with yourself! Allow yourself to make mistakes and to learn from these.

Keep a belief in yourself that you will be BETTER and BETTER.
